How to choose a jump ring for DIY jewelry?

The jump ring is one of the most commonly used findings in DIY jewelry. It allows you to connect a chain to a clasp, hang a pendant, or assemble multiple components together.

The first criterion to consider is the type of ring. Open jump ringsare designed to be opened and then closed using two pliers. They are ideal for assembling most jewelry. Closed or soldered jump ringsoffer superior strength and are recommended for heavy pendants, bracelets subjected to significant tension, or high-end creations.

The inner diameter directly influences compatibility with chains and pendants. A ring that is too small can prevent assembly, while a ring that is too large can detract from the jewelry's aesthetic.

The wire gauge is also important. Thin rings offer more discretion but support less weight. Thick rings are recommended for heavy jewelry, keychains, or creations intended for daily wear.

To ensure good visual and mechanical consistency, it is advisable to use rings made of the same material as the other findings: stainless steel, 925 silver, Gold Filled, brass, or fantasy metal.

FAQs

What size jump ring should I choose to make a piece of jewelry?

The diameter depends on the elements to be assembled and the size of the chain links. To connect a clasp to a delicate chain, a 3 to 5 mm ring is usually sufficient (while checking the wire thickness). To connect several elements or use large-link chains, it is often necessary to use 6 to 10 mm rings. The goal is to allow mobility of the components while maintaining a discreet finish.

What is the difference between an open jump ring and a closed jump ring?

An open jump ring has an opening that allows components to be assembled. It is designed to be opened sideways and then closed precisely. A closed (or soldered) jump ring forms a continuous circle with no opening and offers superior mechanical strength. It is often used for heavy pendants, sturdy bracelets, or jewelry intended for intensive use.

In what cases should a closed jump ring be used instead of an open jump ring?

Closed jump rings are recommended when the security of the assembly is a priority: heavy natural stone pendants, bracelet clasps, key rings, men's jewellery or creations subject to repeated pulling. They eliminate the risk of accidental opening that can sometimes occur with a poorly closed jump ring.
