How to choose a stainless steel chain for DIY jewelry?

Stainless steel is now one of the most widely used materials in DIY jewelry due to its robustness, stability over time, and excellent value for money.

You will mainly encounter two grades of steel: 304and 316L. 304 steel is widely used for jewelry chains and findings. 316L steel contains molybdenum, which further improves its resistance to corrosion, perspiration, and humid environments.

The choice of chain link depends on the desired style. Curb chains are the most versatile for hanging pendants. Gourmette chains offer more visual presence. Snake chains provide a more elegant look, while trombone (paperclip) chains are particularly trendy for modern creations.

The diameter of the chain should be appropriate for the weight of the pendant. A 1 to 1.5 mm chain is generally suitable for lightweight pendants. For a large natural stone, an engraved medal, or a heavy pendant, it is advisable to choose a chain of 2 mm or more.
